Plenty of sub plots for the Bianconeri’s visit to La Viola for Wednesday night’s Coppa semi final first leg. Fiorentina continued to be somewhat of a feeder club to Juve when they sold their prize possessions Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic in the space of 18 months. But to their credit they buy wisely. In came forgotten former Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek and Ligue 1 winner from Lille Jonathan Ikone. La Viola are stuck in 8th in Serie A so they harbor realistic expectations of winning this trophy. So as often happens in soccer, the best team didn’t win this one. I mean don’t get me wrong Juventus deserve credit for finishing off that one real chance they got in injury time but Fiorentina really needed to be sharp in front of goal. The three at the back(no Chiellini no Bonucci)lined up by Juve was an open invitation to attack and they did just that creating 22 chances to score. Max Allegri went for more control in midfield with 5 across which included Artur and Locatelli. He didn’t get it. Just watch the clip on 40 seconds. Passing in your own box is in fashion these days but very few do it well without committing errors. Why would you pass right in front of your goal with a player open to the flank? Ikone can remonstrate to Bonaventura all he wants for not passing but the later had a legitimate claim to shooting for goal.

Juve looked light weight in the defensive midfield department, often caught out in transition. But as the match went on goalless, Juve got a whole lot confident of securing at least a draw to take to the Allianz Stadium. The most impressive player of the match was Lucas Torreira, the Ex Arsenal midfield hardman. His passing was great although his shooting needs work. Check out his pass to release Kone who probably is the one to kick himself the most for missing a lot of chances. And then the sucker punch. Lorenzo Venuti was unfortunate to turn the cross from another Ex La Viola player Cuadrado into his own net. The cross was fizzing across and Lorenzo Venuti couldn’t adjust in time but the slight deflection on the ball by the defender in front of him Milenkovic cannot be overlooked. Good win for Juve but 1 shot on target with 85% passing accuracy only from sideways passes doesn’t make confident reading going into the future.
