The first World Tour race of 2022 got underway in the Emirates. This is a race dominated by the Slovenians with Primoz Roglic winning in 2019 and Tadej Pogacar winning in 2020. Slow breakaway in an otherwise uneventful race , just minor crashes in a flat surface in the desert at Madinat Zayed. Jasper Philipsen of team Alpecin- Felix winning the tricky bunched sprint finish. He won it after good racing at the barriers beating Dylan Groenewegen at the road margins by slipping past him. Dylan could have done better but credit has to go where it is due. Must feel good for just to win a sprint full of great star sprinters like Mark Cavendish if Great Britain. UAE as would be expected is a furnace this time of the year so a clever race was required from the riders as there was little wind, just at the start of the 184km race. You must take care of your wheels in such conditions. Dimitri Strakhov found that out after a bit of collateral damage on them after winning the Intermediate sprint and much required bonus points. Sam Bennett who moved to Bora-Hansgrohe for 2022 finished second ahead of Viviani of Italy. Bora ran a risky race , racing at the rear of the peloton until the final 10km of the race but it paid off. With that win Jasper takes over the GC with a time of 4:42:24.
