This could well turn out to be the most controversial AFCON in history. The drama off the pitch just never seems to be ending. Gabon are enjoying life without their big name players at this year’s tournament registering a win over Comoros Islands in game one of Group C. Ghana are the more illustrious of the two teams having won the Africa Cup 4 times. Ghana called up a very strong squad which includes the Ayew brothers and English Premier League based pair of Daniel Armatey and Thomas Partey. They looked on course for all three points after gaining the lead through former Swansea man Andre Ayew. Let call it a goal that they didn’t deserve as they lacked urgency from the start, preferring slow methodical build ups. If anything Gabon should have taken the lead after 5 minutes. No communication between the keeper Wollacott and Partey just watch. The goal though is the best goal of an otherwise low scoring tournament thus far. Dede has always had that power in his shot giving the Gabon keeper little chance to stop it. But it was his turn that set up the chance for himself. Now based in the middle east, Andre received much shtick to his subpar performance against Morocco in game one he showed he still had it.

But what did Ghana do after they scored? They shut down shop. The Andre Ayew goal was their only shot on target for the whole game. When you try to hold on to such a tiny lead you playing with fire. They literary went 5 at the back and were confident (misplaced as it may be) that they could hold on to the lead. Jim Allevinah punished them with aplomb with 3 minutes lest to play. The CR7 like step over creating space for the low left footed shot for the French based winger who had come on as a sub. The draw was the least that Gabon deserved out of this game as they bossed the second stanza, never shy in terms of attempts at goal. The draw left Ghana on one point going into the last match with Morocco already through on 6 points followed by 4 points for Gabon. Here is the controversial part. After the final whistle Andre Ayew got incensed by the Gabon coach’s Patrice Neveu over the top celebration. This sparked a brawl involving both sides subs and players. I can’t say it was a Jose Mourinho style over the top celebration, maybe Dede heard something said. Benjamin Tetteh threw punches at Aaron Boupendza in the melee and was shown a red card.
