The Italian top flight returned after the holiday break on Thursday under a cloud of uncertainty. All 10 fixtures were in doubt as various local authorities ordered immediate quarantine as Covid-19 cases rose in Italy. This fixture is one of six to take place. Roma has been the epitome of inconsistency this season but they come into this one with a buoyant win over Atalanta before the break. The Rossoneri are title contenders this season are 4 points behind Inter whose game with Bologna was called off. Indiscipline cost the Giallorossi the match starting in the 9th minute when Tammy Abraham needlessly handles a Theo Hernandez shot in the box which his keeper had covered. Now one cannot blame the England striker entirely as he didn’t know what was behind him. Giroud in for a rare start with Zlatan and Rebic starting from the bench. Diaz the deep lying striker had an excellent game should have scored when he struck the post so did ex-Roma full back Florenzi. I don’t think playing three at the back for Roma suits them at all. Maybe this was forced on Mourinho by lack of personnel but Ibanez and Mancini looked shaky.
Just look at the Junior Messias goal. I mean normally there is an extra center back to pass onto, instead Ibanez found Giroud and it went downhill from there. One positive in as far as how Roma play is that they don’t need a lot of chances to score goals. With Zaniolo, Tammy, Mkhitaryan and Pellegrini in your team it is not hard to see why. Did Karsdorp need to make the challenge on Theo whilst on a yellow card? Roma are like Arsenal in a way, they lose their discipline at crucial moments. Moments where you need to use your head and put the team first especially at a time when Roma are short of players because of the pandemic. Now Roma will be without two important defenders in Karsdorp and Mancini due to their suspension. It was a comfortable night for Milan all in all. Zlatan eventually came in for the last 10 minutes and assisted Leao for the third. A penalty miss , weak by Zlatan’s standards , didn’t affect the result but knowing the Swede he will be very hard on himself.
