With such a rich tennis history, one wonders why Russia has only managed to win the Davis Cup twice. Maybe the reason was that their best players didn’t take it as seriously as the Tour. Russia’s opponents here Sweden have won it 7 times but they come into this one as heavy underdogs. The Ymer brothers of Sweden face world number 3 Medvedev and number 5 Rublev, Russia taking things seriously getting their big players available for the Finals. My focus is on WORLD NUMBER 94 Mikael Ymer’s match with Daniil a second singles rubber. Rublev found the going tough against Mikael’s older brother Elias, ranked 167 in the world, but prevailed in three sets. Mikael is the better of the two brothers, not only because of his flashy style reminiscent of Gael Monfils, but he has genuinely good all round game. One can tell though that clay is his strongerst surface. Check out first game of the match deuce adv Sweden. That Sergi Bruguera like two handed backhand is a rarity these days , it strongly features on the dirt. He also moves around the court well. On the negative side, losing serve so early against an opponent like Daniil is suicidal. Ymer’s inexperience showing at 1-1(15-40) going for the winner way too quickly. Daniil’s forehand needs no inroduction. It pummeled the young Swede to submission in set one especially on the Russian’s serve. First set 6-4 Russia. Best game was at 3-2 for Ymer getting the better of Daniil at the net.

Ymer lost serve again early when a confident hold would have set him nicely seeing that he was serving first. Mikael’s inexperience showing again at 40-30 hitting the forehand long from the baseline. This time Daniil was better in set two on the Ymer racquet. He wasn’t shabby coming from behind in rallies too. Watch 2-0 adv Daniil looking to go a double break up. Watch the backhand retrieval mid rally putting off the youngster. From there it was downhill for the Swede. To his credit , Mikael bounced straight back into it breaking Daniil. A little complacency from the Russian there. The one break was enough to seal the tie 6-4 and a date with Germany in the semis. Let’s face it a Serbia-Russia final is the dream here. The Germans look like they can give us an upset so never look down upon them even without the Zverevs. Croatia with Marin Cilic always dangerous.
