The season finale features two players on form who in keeping with the recent unpredictability of the women’s game, were unseeded for the tournament. Garbine has found her best tennis after a long time following a shaky start to the tournament against Pliskova. Anett’s reputation is growing but has staggered in her last two games battling past Sakkari to make the final. The coin toss didn’t go too well for Billie Jean King(they should have given her dice instead haha) but Garbine need not even worry about losing the toss. She was off the blocks the more impressive. On serve she was effortless and ultimately double faultless.

Watch 1-0(40-15), the serve to the backhand. Kontaveit ever so dangerous when played to her forehand broke back immediately after losing at 2-1. If you had to serve to Anett’s forehand it had to be wide on the deuce court like at 3-2(15-15) or it had to be bang on the T on the ad court. On to the Anett serve now. The Estonian’s serve was at its most poorest for a while, first serve percentage below par at 52%. As a result she was under pressure on her second serve which showed in her last service game on the first set at 5-3. What a way to win the set by the Spaniard though at 15-40. Anett let herself down to be honest with you by ,one, playing the uncharacteristic weak forehand to the corner from the net which lacked any conviction. Two, not chasing back to retrieve the Muguruza lob, never make assumptions that it will be long, always chase.

Six double faults by Anett Kontaveit was equal to a break of serve and a half probably contributed to her loss here. She went down from averaging three this tournament. Meanwhile Garbine was bossing the rallies from baseline city, check out depth of the groundstrokes at 1-0 second set first point. Watch her struggles from the baseline continue at 3-2 first deuce on the clip. When she attacked the net that’s when she had the most joy. Check out the second deuce. She became favorite for the set when she broke serve first to take a 4-3 lead. She rediscovered the form that has seen her win 48 matches this year, the most by any player on Tour, by finding those corners.

Watch 4-3 first point. Muguruza was in trouble serving to stay in the set at 5-3. She adopted a varied strategy during the rallies and charged the net at (30-15) to much success. Garbine holding to put pressure on Anett. Anett losing serve at 5-4(15-40) handing the momentum to Garbine. Despite the improvement in set two with some stunning winners like at 5-5(40-30) , Anett losing the match on a heartbreaker 7-5. A loose and error strewn service game at 6-5 proving her undoing , losing to love. An anticlimax to an impressive season for the Estonian who in my view is the player of the season on the WTA Tour. Garbine showing that she is far from past her best with a great last 3 months of the season.
