Group G was the last group to determine who automatically qualifies for Qatar 2022. An interesting three way battle for the spot between Holland(20 points), Norway(18 points) and Turkey(18 points). Permutations? Well A win for either Holland they are in, a win for Norway means they depend on whether Turkey beats Montenegro and by how much the scandinavians win by. A draw meant the Netherlands still go through as they had a huge goal difference over the Turkey.

The home side utterly dominant in the first half with Frenkie De Jong at the heart of most of the attacks. Norway never got going partly because of their lack of urgency, they played this one as though it was a friendly match. The other part was tactical squeezing of the man with the ball high up the pitch by the Dutch. Watch the clip on 41 minutes into the first half. Sorloth(number 9) receives the ball in his own half , with no other options available he turns back towards his own goal and is squeezed by 3 Dutch players , Virgil, Blind and Frenkie to launch another attack. Losing the ball in that part of the part of the field between is almost a death wish for a soccer team. The finishing was lacking however from the Netherlands for most of this match.

Wheelchair bound Van Gaal(injured hip in a bicycle injury at training, don’t ask me what a bike was doing in soccer training haha) scouted the Norwegians very well. They like their passing game just as much as the Dutch do. They have competent passers like Arsenal’s Odegaard and Normann but they were seriously deprived of space and spent most of the match on defensive duties. The only time they had some success in attack was from a long throw on 53 minutes. As the match went on a goalless draw suited Holland as Turkey were only winning by a single goal.

That is not the Dutch way of soccer hey. They wanted the win and they got it on 82 minutes. Another lost ball in a crucial area for Norway. Dutch devastatingly good on transition and finished off by Bergwijn. The Spurs man had lost his place in the side in the earlier qualifiers because of his poor form for the club. He shows what they were missing. Look, life ain’t fair. Memphis was top scorer for most of these qualifiers until on Monday when Kane struck 4 times against perennial whipping boys San Marino to go on 12 versus Memphis’s 10. The Dutch attacker made it 2-0 to seal it with another goal on the counter started in his own half by Bergwijn as Norway began to roll the dice by attacking in the closing stages leaving virtually no one in defense. The Dutch back in the big time after missing Russia with Turkey making do with the play offs. No Erling Haaland in Qatar which is sad.
