The streets were abuzz this past week after news of a Saudi Arabian consortium takeover of Newcastle United over there in Tyneside. This has got the magpies fans dreaming of competing against the elite of European soccer thus dream line ups were all over social like the one above there. I am here to tell it straight and straight I will tell it. There is the good, the bad and the ugly about this whole deal. Let me start with the good. The good is that the Mike Ashley reign is over and the much needed funds into the Newcastle coffers(300 million pounds was the takeover price) will go a long way in saving the side from relegation which in my opinion was coming this season. The bad(mostly directed at the majority shareholder) is that soccer is not a very profitable business. Clubs run into massive debt just to win trophies by buying players. So if the new owners are hoping to get paid they are in for a rude awakening. The ugly…well…. Saudi Arabia isn’t a human rights record holder of repute here. They have been accused of discrimination against journalists, gays and women. The funds to acquire Newcastle most likely came from a government fund which makes Newcastle an unwitting accomplice to these abuses.

In tennis Roger Federer is about to be exit the top 10 of men’s tennis for the first time in 4 years after ending his season because of a knee surgery. In fact it just did as Hubert Hurkacz has just beaten Frances Tiafoe and will enter the top 10 today. It has taken an injury to remove the Swiss legend from the top ten and this is very worrying indeed. Is the ranking system that inefficient? Partly and not entirely but it shouldn’t be used as an excuse. Is it a matter of Federer being more talented or the other players not being good enough? I will say this talent is overrated. Medvedev showed this at the US Open, a little grit and hard work in matches goes a long way. Lesson for young players you don’t have to be talented to make it on top of the world game.
