Both players coming into this one with one two title apiece. The most experienced being Garbine of course but one could never discount the ability of the rising star from North Africa. Both players mirrored each other in terms of serving at 66% on first serve. However Ons’s second serve wasn’t as effective especially in the third set. I was looking forward to seeing how Muguruza will play against the backhand drop shot. Check out first game deuce. Jabeur wasting no time in applying her favorite shot, Garbine got there only just. Even though she lost the point, this was a good sign of things to come later in the match for Muguruza. First set breakthrough was Ons’s. Watch 2-1(30-0). Garbione opting for safety by hitting the forehand down the line well into court. A little closer to the line would have made it 30-15. Ons closing out the set with that single break much to the jubilation of the Tunisian contingent in the crowd. Guess the shot that made it happen at set point?

Muguruza isn’t a two time grand slam champion for nothing though. She came roaring back in set two after going down a break early after out of this world ground strokes from Ons. Check out 1-0 first point. Watch her turn on the offensive from the weak second serve and never looked back. Shot of the match was Jabeur’s, 2-2(30-15 Jabeur). Great balance from Ons(low center of gravity), had to get it right as Garbine was right on the net, with the roll of the wrist to get as much topspin on the ball as possible. That loss of serve would have unnerved other players but not Garbine. She went on to win the next 4 games to take the set to a decider. Like I said the second serve by Jabeur really let her down. Watch how Garbine took full advantage of it by going on the attack early in the point at 3-2(15-40).

Just how did it came about that the third set would be this one sided? The pressure of the occasion got to the Tunisian. Check out how easily she lost serve in the opening game specifically at 0-30. Another serve which wasn’t even close to be good enough for this level playing right into Garbine’s favorite forehand cross court winner. Now contrast this to 1-0(15-0). The serve was hit with power and away from the body by Muguruza and it set up the rest of the point for her. Garbine’s experience shining as bright as a pin in Chicago. Ons shouldn’t be too much disheartened by being bagel-ed in this set she had a great tournament. One shoudn’t forget she was going for her first WTA500 tournament win here.
