World number one Ash Barty became the first Aussie to win the title in Cincinnati for 48 years with an impressive straight sets victory over Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann. Barty ended the week without dropping a set on the way to a memorable victory, her fifth title of the year. The first six games of the match was pretty close and competitive, you could have sworn we were going to have a long three setter. Not this time. Jil’s movement impressed me in this one. She has a diminutive frame so you would expect that and also that her serve will be the weaker of the two. Nope, serve was better than Barty nailing 61% on first serve. Check out 2-1(15-0). Point construction at its best, wide serve for the one two punch. Teichmann bidding to WIN her first WTA 1000 tile was off to a good start, that is up until she started to challenge Barty on the baseline which we all know is a tall order. Watch 3-2(40-30). The best advice I can give a tennis player when you are in a baseline rally with Barty is go for it early, the hail Mary shot that is , unsettle her. Jil did not. The point of the game for me was 5-3(15-15), the best moment to play the drop shot in my opinion. The angled volley at the net by Jil good enough to win the point on another day but Barty my word got there, only just.

Jil never got to grips with the forehand strokes from Ash Barty in the second set. This resulted in her only winning just one game in that one. Check out the nervous approach to the Barty forehand by Jil at 40-40 first game second set. Barty realizing Jil’s backhand weakness being a lefty. There were however glimpses of the player who ousted Naomi Osaka from the tournament earlier in the week. Watch 2-0(adv Barty, the first one). The one two punch again from the serve working for her, wish she could have done that more often we would have had a match on our hands. Barty took a leaf from her book at 3-0(40-0) too. At a double break up 4-0 there was no way back for Jil. Being her first WTA1000 final, this should be a great for her learning curve in terms of her career. Barty cementing her status as the PLAYER of the season in the ladies Tour.
