Nobody saw this one coming in the cycling circles. An amateur winning a gold medal in a strong cycling field in the women’s section. Anna Kiesenhofer of Austria rode a great race almost from start to finish to beat the fancied Dutch team in which took Silver and Italy bronze. One might say she took advantage of poor tactical astuteness of her fellow competitors to take this one but hey she had the stamina to withstand a late attack by the silver medalist Annemiek van Vleuten with about 5km to go to seal GOLD. Not bad for a 30 year old time trialist with no team in the WORLD TOUR. Isn’t the victory ever that sweeter when your opponent is clueless that she has lost the race?
