He may have a small frame but he has a huge heart and lung capacity to boot. Yes Richard Carapaz is the new Olympic champion is toad cycling burying an A list rider lineup that included Pogacar,Van Aert, Yates,Roglic and Thomas. Timing was what did it for the Ecuadorian, attacking the final 25km together with USA’s Brendan McNulty who rode the race of his life only to fail to make it to the podium at the end. Carapaz then dropped the American with about 6km to go and from there he rode solo all the way to the finish at the Fuji Speedway to reign supreme after just over 6 hours. At 234 km this is easily the most difficult cycling race in Olympic history.
The hot and humid conditions persisting in Japan at the moment suited Carapaz who is a mountain riding specialist and is used to training in these conditions. Wout Van Aert of Belgium out sprinting Tadej Pogacar to the silver with the red hot favorite from Slovenia finishing third for the bronze. This race may have come a bit too soon for Taddy after the Tour De France win a week ago which was a brutal 21 stage affair. Pogacar attacked way too early when he became the first big rider to break free in this race. Team Great Britain’s chances of winning the hold 🏅 was significantly slashed with about 150 km to go when a crash occured which involved Geraint Thomas, Tao Hart and Giulio Ciccone. Thomas would eventually abandon the race. Great one day race for the cycling fan. Maybe a suggestion to the organizers. Making it a 3 stage race would be great, to really test the endurance of the riders and eliminate naysayers who say that maybe a rider won it by a fluke. My suggestion 🤷🙅.
