The Copa America is underway in Brazil despite all the controversy on whether it should take place at all with the coronavirus wreaking havoc in the country. Argentina just played their third game of their group, Group A against Paraguay in Brasilia. The organizers Conmebol have gone with 2 groups of five with this group consisting of Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia in addition to the above mentioned two teams. Now I would have gone for three groups of 4 inviting USA and Canada, two up and coming talented squads but hey what do I know. Anyway I got to see the other side of the Albiceleste, the pragmatic and cautious side. I do not blame them recent results haven’t exactly gone Argentina’s way when they have played on the front foot.
Nice to see Atalanta playmaker Gomez get a run in the team score a beauty with a deft touch despite the hint of offside. VAR duly ratified the goal. He has to play out of position though wide on the left to enable the Argentines accommodate the mercurial Messi on the playmaker position number 10. One thing that might count against the Argentines is their aging frontline that includes Messi, Di Maria and Kun Aguero whose pace seems to have taken a step back over the season. But that doesn’t mean they are not dangerous in other areas particularly free kicks. Watch the Messi free kick which just sailed wide of the post on 17 minutes and the Kun Aguero snap shot with his back to goal on 6 minutes. Argentina are looking more assured at the back with Romero and Pezzella holding fort. Paraguay’s most threatening players were Almiron with his darting runs from the wing and the two Romeros particularly from set pieces. Argentina topping the Group with 7 points from 3 games.
