Jakob Fuglsang ran out of gas and was pipped by Richard Carapaz in the last 5 meters. Stage five occured in much better conditions than any of the previous four with sunny weather. The two big climbs at the end meant no ferocious sprint at the end but a desperate trudge to the finish. The Ecuadorian Carapaz attacked the last climb 18 km from the finish probably sizing up the Dane Jakob’s physical condition to conquer the ascent. Watch with 3km of the race to go, Jakob letting Richard get in front of him. That for me was the game changer. Jakob should have opened up a gap there and then and I doubt Carapaz would have had anything left to mount the sprint at the end. Fuglsang should not be disheartened though. He is second overall behind Richard by 26 seconds which is not insurmountable by any stretch.
