The soccer season is done and dusted. No fans didn’t mean no thrills, not by any stretch. There were some pretty wretched goalless games in between but generally the goals flowed. I have compiled the 5 matches that i think were outstanding will be forever stick in my memory for the foreseeable future. Hope you like. Starting off is my team of the season Leeds…

Leeds were among a host of select sides to take more than three points from the Champions this season. With the way they have played under Marcelo Bielsa, this didn’t surprise me. Leeds always stick to their attacking philosophy regardless of the point in match as well as the score line. Sterling putting City ahead in the first half but the Whites came roaring back in the second half equalizing through Rodrigo. They out-passed City, beat them in possession and shots on target. Leeds are a newly promoted side by the way to achieve that again a Pep side is the stuff of praise.

This match makes the list for all the right and wrong reasons. This produced some great goals and a dramatic finish. Merseyside Derbies can give you that. But it produced a shocking VAR incident that had the football world in uproar. England keeper Pickford’s blatant foul on Virgil went unpunished , ended the Dutch center back’s season and kaput went Liverpool’s season with him. Calvert Lewin and Keane were on target for the Toffees with Salah and Mane for the Reds. One more incident, the disallowed Henderson goal failed to cover VAR in any glory whatsoever.

October 2020 was some month. Liverpool were shell shocked by a rampant Villa who produced the stand out result of the season. Nine goals went in during the game of which both sides forgot how to defend. Villa who had barely survived relegation the previous season more than were a match for any side during this powered by their main men Grealish and Watkins. Not only did this match dent Liverpool’s title charge it dented their goal difference as well. It took a 7-0 hammering of Crystal Palace to balance this result out. It is astonishing that the Reds conceded the most amount of goals for the season in this match when they had their first choice defensive partnership in Virgil and Gomez. So that excuse for not retaining the title won’t fly, Liverpool fans.

Its not everyday that a player scores a hat trick at the home of Man City. Jamie Vardy went home with the match ball in what was then a statement of intent performance by the Foxes. Man City showing defensive weaknesses particularly from Kyle Walker, Garcia and Ake showing what a crucial signing Dias was. Its a pity Leicester couldn’t sustain this sort of form but the match showed that as long as they keep their most important players , Ndidi, Vardy, Tielemans, Maddison and Iheanacho they can be a force in the next few seasons. Whoever said Mahrez is all about his left foot is raving mad.

Spurs had a forgettable season first under Jose Mourinho and then caretaker manager Ryan Mason. It is this match that makes number two on my list. West Ham coming back from 3-0 down in the last 10 minutes of the game to draw 3-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. If anything this match is what got Jose fired from the job. He failed to marshal the troops to see out a game and the fact that he is known for drilling his teams defensively is a further indictment. Son and a Kane double had the Hammers 3-0 down in the first 20 minutes. David Moyes has come up with a very competitive West Ham side with a good attacking focal point in Antonio ably supported by a midfield apex of Declan Rice and Soucek. But it was the most unlikeliest of sources that turned the match on its head. Defender Balbuena and sub Lanzini with arguably the goal of the season were instrumental.
