Tuesday was a rest day so the action returned at the Giro with stage 11 on Wednesday. The Stage course was 162km from Perugia to Montalcino was characterized by 4 gravel portions. Whoever conquered the stage had a distinct advantage as far as points go. A rookie named Mauro Schmid won the race which is his maiden victory as a pro. If you are starting out in cycling here is a few pointers on racing on gravel.Believe it or not the trickiest thing about racing on gravel isn’t its effect on the bike. If the conditions were dry like yesterday’s the effect on the eye sight cannot be discounted. Having your eye wear on is strongly recommended. Gravel also makes the surface slippery so having tires in good condition is a must for achieving the correct grip.

Overall leader Bernal gained over two minutes on second placed Remco Evenepoel who struggled in the race.Remco was dropped with about 26 km of the race to go. Stage winner Schmid beat another youngster Alessandro Covi of UAE Team Emirates in the final two rider sprint. Covi gave up the ghost too early for my liking , watch his pull back with about 10 meters to finish. Maybe he was exhausted from earlier exertions .Gravel roads can do that to you.
