Esteban Chaves deservedly won stage 4 but Adam Yates pushed him to the limit in the final climb with just 7 kilometres of the race to go. Yates maintained his overall lead despite finishing fourth. After opening up the sizable gap, Chaves could afford to drop off with 1.5 kilometres to go. This allowed Enric Mas to attempt to close the gap but was quickly countered by Carapaz to end his challenge.
