It was the clash of the former French Open Champs on Wednesday in Dubai when Muguruza clashed with Poland’s Iga Swiatek. It was the 2016 winner from Spain who bested Iga(2020) in straight sets 6-0 6-4 in a surprisingly easy game for her. Iga did not serve particularly well, often short and lacking conviction. Garbine on the other hand was on a roll barely making errors in the first set and ran away with it for a bagel. If you want evidence that Iga was defeated in that game without me showing you the result, check out the break point Garbine won to lead 5-0. Iga hit a decent serve which Garbine hit short with her back hand. Swiatek inexplicably hit a routine forehand long to give away the break. Second set was much better for Iga,finally waking up from her slumber. Muguruza was in no generous mood getting break points in no time at 1-1(15-40) , the forehand cross court doing the damage, Iga rooted on the baseline.Shot of the match. Garbine leading 2-1 and 30-15. The lady from Spain punishing another short forehand from Iga in the rally with a monster back hand down the line. One could feel Iga can pack her rackets and head home now.

Trailing 3-1, she showed some of the fight that saw her win her first major last year. Back to basics play, a solid serve and follow through with the forehand. She managed to break Garbine’s serve for the first and only time in the match at 3-2 to level the set at 3-3. That was as good as it got for the Pole as Garbine regained her break in the ninth game. Swiatek who served a disappointing 38% on first serve double faulting at 4-4(30-30) and then hitting a forehand into the net the next point. Muguruza now into the last 8 looking good for the title. She now meets the highest seed left in the draw Aryana Sabalenka of Belarus.
